Sustainability

As a small luxury boutique lodge in Auckland, New Zealand, we believe we have a responsibility equal to that of a major world hotel group to do everything possible to minimise our impact on the environment.

When Prospect Hill was built in 1869, the term "eco" was yet to enter any world language. Now, almost one and a half centuries later, governments, corporations, small businesses and private individuals have all become highly focussed on the issues of sustainability and conservation.

We too, are very concious of the footprint we invariably leave on the environment, and are focussed on what we can do to minimise that footprint.

While as a very small business we may find it difficult to embrace the major environmental projects possible for large companies, we are constantly trying to action the little things that in total, we hope will help our overall goal of minimising our environmental impact.

Among other initiatives we:

  • Use eco light bulbs where appropriate
  • Utilise sensor lighting
  • Collect roof rain water for garden irrigation
  • Use recycled paper for our stationary
  • Use kitchen waste for composting ( returned to the garden )
  • Recycle waste in conjunction with our local council
  • Use non-chemical garden sprays and weedkillers
  • Use eco cleaning products
  • Use recycled doors, bricks and timber, where possible, in our refurbishments
  • Use energy efficient heat transfer and cooling systems
  • Offer guests the choice of eco friendly toiletries
  • Maintain a plant and tree replacement policy
  • Replacement appliances chosen with an emphasis on energy efficiency

Our environmental journey has only just begun, and we are always aware that we must remain constantly committed to the environmental cause.

After all, this is the only planet we have. We need to protect it for the next generation.
