Auckland - Things to Do

Auckland, the international gateway to New Zealand, is a sprawling city of over 1.2 million people, who occupy the isthmus between the Tasman Sea to the west and the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

The city's unique beauty and character is strongly influenced by the sea and it is affectionately known as "the city of sails" - the Hauraki Gulf providing Aucklanders with their year round playground.

Howick, our Auckland home, is one of the the city's popular eastern seaside suburbs with relaxing beaches and a charming and vibrant centre and excellent transport links to the rest of this very decentralised city.

Both locally and just a little further afield, there are plenty of things to do in Auckland.

Local things to do:
  • Enjoy lovely coastal and bush walks.
  • Enjoy the "village" atmosphere of historic Howick town.
  • Relax at one of our five local beaches.
  • Visit Howick Historical Village, an award winning living museum recreating early Fencible European settlement.  Their "live" weekends are a delight.
  • Take the ferry to downtown, enjoying our beautiful harbour, visit the Sky Tower, and then return to your personal "haven" with us.
  • Visit famous Ayrlies Gardens, as featured in BBC2's " Around the World in 80 Gardens". Considered one of the most beautiful private gardens open to the public in Australasia and officially a garden of World Significance. Closed w/ends and public holidays. ( 10 minutes drive )
  • Shop 'till you drop at Botany, one of New Zealands top shopping precints ( 6 minutes drive )
  • Take a day trip to Waiheke Island, just across the water - you can take your car if you wish.
  • Golfer? If you would like to play your golf on a beautiful course overlooking the sea, we think you will love Howick golf course.
  • Take a drive along the scenic Pohutakawa coast south-east from Howick, then return via the attractive rural village of Clevedon. A one hour plus drive that takes in small seaside villages and lovely rural coutryside.
  • If you are here on a Sunday and an early riser, Clevedon's farmers market is delightful, not just about produce but a way to feel part of NZ country living ( 20 minutes drive ).
City-wide things to do:

  • Visit Kelly Tarltons Underwater World, with it's emphasis on the fascinating Southern Ocean / Antarctica environment ( Mission Bay )
  • Take a wine tour through Auckland's wine country, where the country's wine industry began ( west Auckland )
  • Enjoy great views and entertainment at Sky City ( downtown )
  • Take a drive to the spectacularly wild west coast beaches of Piha or Murawai, location for films such as " the Lord of the Rings" and "the Piano" ( 2.5 hour round trip ).
  • Visit the Auckland Museum, one of the two flagship museums in the country - Wellington's Te Papa is the other ( Parnell ).

......and that is just a beginning!
